Global Skills: Intercultural Competence

Facilitators: Mushtakhusen S.M. & Patricia Andrada

In today’s globalized world, most people encounter members from other cultures, and for many of them, this happens on a regular basis, whether in social, political, or commercial contexts. It is therefore important for them, in all areas of their lives, to be able to interact successfully with people from cultures different from theirs. This ability is called intercultural competence.

Intercultural competence is needed for people from different cultures – with their different values, practices, and ways of communicating – to avoid conflict and misunderstanding. It requires them to be flexible in their thinking and to recognize that people are complex individuals. To see people in ways that are simple and not complex is to stereotype them.

In this 5-week course, you will be able to:

  • demonstrate openness and curiosity about your own and diverse cultures
  • communicate respectfully and appropriately with others from diverse cultural backgrounds
  • understand and appreciate your own cultural or multicultural identities
  • demonstrate an awareness of your roles and responsibilities as citizens within society
  • understand your local and global roles with regard to national and international issues, such as environmental issues and sustainable living practices.
